New Scholarships Offered by CIVOC

Each year the Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center awards four $1000 scholarships. The first three are awarded to high school students who belong to a veteran family. Beginning this year, those scholarships will be named  after three of our original founders, Roy Pacheco, Michael Trainor, and Michael Williams.

The fourth is awarded to a student veteran and is given in memory of Captain Eric Jones, a Marine helicopter pilot who lost his life in Afghanistan. Captain Jones’ parents now reside on Cape Cod and are untiring advocates for the support of our veterans.  We were honored when the Joneses gave us permission to name our first veteran scholarship awarded in 2015, the Captain Eric Jones Memorial Scholarship, in honor of their son.

In 2019, we have added three new scholarships.  The first is the Nicholas G. Xiarhos Memorial Scholarship which is funded by the foundation of the same name, and will also be awarded to a veteran who is currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution.

The third and fourth are the Michael and Lisa Serabian Scholarships which will be awarded to high school seniors who have been accepted to a post-secondary trade school.

The scholarships are awarded directly to student and not to the institutions in order to fund the  book costs, lab fees and other costs associated with attending an accredited college or post-secondary trade or vocational school.

PLEASE FILL OUT THE COMPLETE APPLICATION WHICH CAN BE FOUND IN THE SERVICES SECTION UNDER SCHOLARSHIPS AND RETURN IT TO THE CAPE AND ISLANDS VETERANS OUTREACH CENTER, c/o Jack Bonino,  247 STEVENS STREET, SUITE E, HYANNIS, MA, 02601 NO LATER THAN APRIL 30, 2019 .

The Cape & Islands Veterans Outreach Center (CIVOC) and The Golf Club at Sacconnesset (TGCS) are very proud to announce their new partnership.  TGCS has chosen CIVOC to run its annual TGC For The Troops golf tournament.  All proceeds from the tournament will go towards funding CIVOC’s mission to provide Cape Cod Veterans and their families with a comprehensive menu of the essential, life altering and life sustaining services which will empower them to achieve a lasting reintegration into the families and communities for which they have sacrificed.

TGCS has established a legacy of giving within the community and is well known for its philanthropic endeavors in several other areas in addition to veteran causes.  The TGC Fund has been a fundamental source of support for veterans and their families all over Cape Cod raising $365,000 raised in the past 10 years.

This year’s member-guest tournament will be held at TGCS on 10 June 2019.  There is also a free veterans golf clinic for veterans of all eras on 9 June 2019.

The first CIVOC Speaker Series is a resounding success

Professor Michael Kamorski led a very lively and informative strategic discussion on global and domestic terror threats.  Professor Kamorski encouraged the 35 people attending to participate by asking questions throughout the presentation.  The CIVOC Speaker Series is geared towards outreach on different topics of interest to both veterans and the Cape Cod Community. Stay tuned for our next in the series of talks coming in early spring!

Second Annual Veterans Town Hall

On Sunday, November 11, 2108, the Cape and Islands Veterans Outreach Center will host its second annual Veterans Town Hall.  A concept initiated by author Sebastion Junger and Congressman Seth Moulton, this event is a forum for  veterans who have experienced combat to speak for 10 minutes relating their own personal experience with war.  Per the guidelines established for this event, it involves no question or comments, no politicizing on the nature and effects of war; it is strictly intended to share with the community the human experience of these veterans.

Our first Town Hall was met with a very positive response from the many attending, and so we look forward this year to informing many others with this moving experience. The veterans who speak are serving all of us, yet again, by enlightening us on the human realities of war.

Any Cape Cod veterans who have experienced combat and wish to participate in this event are asked to contact our Director of Counseling, Jack Bonino by emailing him at jackbonino@yahoo.com or calling him at 508-778-1590, x17.  Participation in this event is limited, so please contact Jack at your earliest convenience if you would be willing to provide this service to the Cape Cod Community.
